Essay
South Africa Is a nation with a very complex and often divided history. For 48 year nearly half a decade South Africa was under the rule of the apartheid regime which divided the nation by race between the white minority and black majority. The white minority was in power for these 48 years and in place apartheid on South Africa. With the whites in control of the country they gave themselves power over the blacks. Using Apartheid they gave the blacks all the poor quality land that could not be farmed, made them live in ghettos and they could only get poorer jobs, But they gave the whites all the good land and they had more social and job opportunities. There was no marriage allowed between blacks and white or racal mixing. It is easy to see that apartheid was evil and gave the whitest the power over the blacks. Since the beginning of Apartheid the blacks have fought to end it. The blacks started off peacefully protesting but after the creation of the military wing of the ANC (African National Congress, a black political party fighting for equality) the blacks started using violence to get equality. Violence in South Africa was necessary to end apartheid in South Africa. This is true for a few reasons firstly their peacefully protest we're not getting anywhere because apartheid law were still being past and secondly the government had killed many blacks and there was no justice just like in sharpsville. However it is possible they could have ended apartheid without violence much like how Gandi completed his goals.
Firstly violence was necessary to end apartheid because nothing else was working. Apartheid was put in place in 1948 ( Wikipedia 2015) and since the beginning of apartheid the blacks were protesting for the end. The ANC is the most notorious organization that fought for black rights was peaceful. In the beginning. The ANC was founded in 1912(Wikipedia 2015) as a response towards the oppression of blacks in South Africa. The ANC protested against apartheid and oppression peacefully for 49 years, but South African government showed no sign of slowing down their oppression. In fact more a more oppressing law on blacks were put in place. It seemed to the ANC that their efforts were for nothing. Then in 1961 the ANC tried a different strategy that is when the Spear of the Nation was founded. The Spear of the Nation was the military wing within the ANC that fought apartheid using terrorism to try to get there way. They sabotaged and bombed government building. Unfortunately bloody this was the end of apartheid.
Secondly the black peoples of South Africa wanted justice for the many wrongs that were put upon their people especially their losses of Sharpsville. The seemly evil empire government of South Africa was getting away with crimes against humanity such as the Sharpeville massacre and oppression a race. To the black people of South Africa it seems as if this government could just get away with anything. That had to stop, but their peaceful protests were not getting the job done. That is why violence was necessary to go against the government of South Africa. Peaceful protest got black people nothing but death and more oppression. The black people of South Africa probably also wanted vengeance for the deaths of their kin and rightfully so. To them the South African government needed to pay for their crimes. No one was punishing them so Spear of the Nation took it upon them selfe to make their own justice.
On the other hand do we know for sure that violence was the only way to stop South Africa apartheid? No we don't hypothetically protesting peacefully may have eventually worked. It worked in India when Gandhi peacefully fought against the repressive English government. However the ANC had been protesting for nearly fifty years and had lost faith that protesting peacefully would be successful. So it is understandable that they would give up on peacefully protesting. How necessary was violence to end apartheid? we do not know but because the ANC used violence apartheid is over and South Africa is in a better place.
South Africa’s history of racial tension is a bloody one. South Africa has overcome many obstacles in its history to get where it is today. In order to get to where is is violence had to happen so racial equality could happen. Violence was a necessary option because protesting for decades did not work and the government thought they could get away with massacres and killings like the Sharpeville massacre, but do we know if apartheid could have been ended without violence? We do not but because violence happened it did end. Violence was necessary to end apartheid.
